In bid to reawaken the consciousness of the Unified Local Government Service workforce’s attendance to work, the Delta State Local Government Service Commission, LGSC, has delegated a 4-man team to pay unscheduled visits to the 25 local government councils in order to monitor the attendance of staff to work.
The exercise that was applauded by the Chairmen and the management staff of the various LGAs was carried out in order to ascertain the commitment of staff to their duties.
Addressing some of the Chairmen and the management staff of the various Councils, the Commission Chairman, Hon. Joseph Otirhue represented by the Director of Personnel Management of the Commission, Mr. John Akwakwa, said the Commission had deemed it fit to visit the 25 LGAs as part of her mandate to reawaken the consciousness of staff to attend work regularly and also to sensitize them to change the narrative of non attendance to work.
While expressing his displeasure over this scenario, he emphasized that the era of truancy was over as he enjoined all Local Government staff to wake up from their delirium and treat their jobs with utmost priority as uncommitted staff shall be sanctioned according to the rules and regulations guiding the Service.
Speaking further, the representative of Commission Chairman said, the Commission frowns at staff’s lackadaisical behaviour towards work and that the visit is to ensure that attendance of staff who report regularly to work was taken while defaulters will in turn be disciplined by the Commission. He stressed that, the Commission was not out to witch hunt anyone but to discourage truancy in the Local Government Service.
The Council Chairmen of Isoko South and Udu LGAs Hon. Voke Warri and Olorogun Vincent Oyibode, who were present during the visit, received the team warmly and commended the Commission for the exercise saying it was vital for the system.
They called for a more frequent visit by the Commission so as to eradicate absenteeism from the Service.
While speaking, both Chairmen frowned at staff who don’t report to work who felt they were untouchable due to their affiliation with godfathers.
They both called on the Commission to ensure that strict disciplinary measures are meted out on defaulting staff to serve as deterrent to others adding that if nothing is done, the exercise will not be taken seriously in future times.
They said they had also made efforts to keep tab of those reporting for work adding that only those who report for work regularly are rewarded in their Councils.
The HPMS also commended the effort and called for its regular unscheduled visits as a way of making workers to be more committed and productive in the system.
